About the Project<\/span>+<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/h4>
Today, Bern\u2019s cathedral, the M\u00fcnster is a landmark of its city \u2013 but for several centuries, it was a source of ridicule far beyond the city limits. What looks as if it were made from a single mold was actually created in a series of stages and attempts, which stagnated, and then were pushed forward again, and again, yet remained unfinished for almost half a millennium.\n\nFor a long time, only a small stump rose above the roofs of medieval Bern instead of a slender cathedral tower. In 1421 the first foundation stone was laid but only 472 years later was the work finally completed. Bern had meanwhile developed from a trading town into the seat of government of the Swiss Confederation, founded in 1848. It was then that the Bernese succeeded in completing their cathedral.\n\nSurprisingly, there is a cathedral actually made from a single mold. It is exactly a thousand times smaller than its real model, which towers over the Aare River and the old town. Its history is also a long complicated one.\n\n\u201cBr\u00fcetsch,\u201d (or bro) said the sister of Bernese artist Lorenzo Salafia to her brother in 2005, \u201cI think I\u2019ve discovered a loophole in the market.\u201d At the time, Romina Salafia was working in a small shop in Bern\u2019s old town and unfortunately had to say no whenever customers asked if there was a small souvenir of this great landmark to take home.\n\nThis loophole became an idea. The Salafia siblings photographed the cathedral from\nall sides, obtained old construction plans and floor plans\u2014and still got nowhere. The idea of creating a small, true-to-life cathedral of their own shrunk back into the shadows of Lorenzo Salafia\u2019s mind. For 20 years, the photos and plans from long ago lay in his basement. Until finally, the idea became loud enough to stir again.\n\nThere are now 3D models of Bern and some of its important buildings. 3Dprints made from various materials make it possible to form the smallest details of objects as if they were carved from real sandstone. Nevertheless, when salifa spoke of his idea, many people initially shook their heads. \u201eAre you an architect? Do you have the appropriate computer programs? No? Then forget it.\u201c\n\nBut because forgetting hadn\u2019t worked out over the last twenty years, Salafia stuck with it. He got more people excited about his idea until he finally held a sandstone-colored, rough little model of the large cathedral in his hand. If you turn the little cathedral upside down, it says \u201cmachs na\u201d on its base. The same lettering is also emblazoned in Gothic letters on the large cathedral \u2013 as an invitation to dare to do great things and cultivate one\u2019s own craft. It was added by stonemason Erhart K\u00fcng, the fourth master builder of the cathedral from 1483. And now, almost 500 years later, someone (or Salafia) has finally made the miniature version of the great M\u00fcnster in Bern.<\/div><\/div>
